First published on September 29, 1890, The Michigan Daily is a student-run newspaper that has served as the University of Michigan’s paper of record for more than 130 years. The Michigan Daily trains its staff in written and visual journalism, content creation, advertising and marketing, web development and other industries. More than 50 student managers and editors oversee The Michigan Daily’s staff of 350-plus students each year. With more than 6 million pageviews in 2020, The Daily serves over 40,000 students of the University of Michigan and nearly 350,000 residents throughout Washtenaw County.

Who can join The Daily?

Anyone who attends the University of Michigan, including graduate and international students, can join The Daily! The Daily looks for a range of experiences, skills, and perspectives, and no prior journalism experience is needed.

Where are mass meetings held?

Mass meetings are held in The Michigan Daily newsroom, which is located on the second floor of the Stanford Lipsey Student Publications Building at 420 Maynard St.

When are the deadlines for different positions?

The majority of sections’ applications are due on January 31 at 11:59pm. The sections with different deadlines will have that information provided on the application.

Is work at The Daily paid?

Can I apply and join multiple sections?

Yes, you can! The only exceptions are that you cannot write for both News and Opinion, and you cannot work for both Business and any other section.

What leadership opportunities are available?

All sections at The Daily have plenty of room for advancement for those that are interested and motivated. Depending on the semester, there have also been informal, Daily-wide leadership positions available surrounding recruitment and outreach, special projects, social events and more. Make sure to check with your managing section editor or the Editors in Chief for more information on special leadership opportunities.
